Russians and Turks in the EURO football tournament. Looking at the tournament as a whole?

Russians lost to Spain. Turks lost to Germany. Though the Turks suffered a lot, regarding players available, which has severely affected their chances of progressing further, the Russians did not have such problems. Whereas the Turks, even in the current state of their team, fought hard and barely lost, the Russians almost gave up, they did not put up a fight and succumbed to the Spaniards easily.

The progress of the Russian and Turkish teams in the tournament as well as other notable progress such as the Dutch, Portuguese, Spanish and German teams, notwithstanding the progress of all teams however notable, fluctuate. Each team’s progress traces a curve with its peaks and troughs emerging at different games through the tournament. The Russians, as such, had their peak at their game with Holland, at the same time that the Dutch after having their peak in earlier games were in a downward trend, their progress descending on its way to trough. Certainly, for all the teams individually their peaks and troughs they can ascend or descend, differ.

The point is, that any team’s game quality, should be looked at, for each encounter in the tournament and for all the encounters in the tournament, in a sense of the whole and its parts, and further applying the emergence dictate that the whole is more than the sum of its parts. Can this be relevant here? In what way can this thought be assembled coherently? What are the factors at play here, that can offer substance at looking at a team’s gameplay, in each encounter through the tournament and for all the team’s encounters through the tournament? The connection of the part with the whole?

The Russians gave up completely, the Spaniards won easily. It made the game uninteresting.  Not at all like the game of the Russians with the Dutch, or that of the Turks with the Croats. Are all these make up a whole that is more complicated? Progress the result of the determination, perseverance, composure and all other qualities at play, for each team as a whole and for the individual players in the team? Another whole to be considered on its own merit? How can all these be joined together?
