The History of Football by InfoBritain

A real gem in that website, what a search on chaotic football revealed. The history of football something I have to ponder on.

What impressed me most was these passages:

Winning is not everything in football, simply because it is bad for business. As Wray Vamplew has written: “The ideal market position of a conventional business would be a monopoly, but it is less desirable in sport, for what use is it to be heavy weight champion of the world but to have no challengers? In almost every sport competitors combine to produce a saleable commodity” (Professional Sport in Britain 1875 – 1914 P13).

Though I hate the reason, that the author mentions why this is, namely ‘bad for business‘, the reference ‘winning is not everything in football‘, strikes against what people think of football nowadays, goes against popular beliefs, the way football is handled by FIBA and all other football organisations, but leave it off just now.

Wars are fought to destroy the enemy, totalitarian regimes ruthlessly suppress their opposition. Superficial appearances aside this is not true of football, or of any sport. Perhaps in this sense sport represents the most sensible way to organise life. As Charles Darwin made clear in his Origin of Species the world is not designed to let one organism win all the time. From the beginning of his book he makes it clear that if a plant or animal triumphed unceasingly then the world would soon be swamped by that one organism. If one organism is too successful it simply outstrips its food supply. Life is about both winning and losing. Both have to be accepted. Many people misunderstand Darwin, and see his work only in terms of winners. Many people have the same misconception about sport.

‘Many people misunderstand Darwin’ .. I have that misconception .. and I loathe myself for that .. it took me years to shake it off .. why did I acquire that notion in the first place?  I am not inclined to look at the world and its people in that manner .. from that perspective .. it repulses me .. fills me with revulsion

why is that misconception there in the first place .. somebody must have put it there .. and since in a scene .. so abstract .. so vague ..you wouldn’t expect anyone .. as a named individual .. to have put it there

it was a collective effort .. more like it .. a collection of people .. with a (or many) common interest(s) ..

I never actually read his book .. Darwin’s Origin of Species, I took what other people said .. that he said .. and they passed it on .. as what it mentions as .. “Many people misunderstand Darwin ..” .. in the form that built or builds such a misunderstanding .. and .. “see his work only in terms of winners” .. who the fuck has said that .. if not for the banners swayed .. by all the established world .. what has been heavily promoted .. governments and States’ machinery .. adhere to these dogmas .. education is built upon it .. the winners take all .. the loosers suffer .. if you are not one of the ‘winners‘ you are next to nothing .. s54kay
